One of the most common questions we get at Rainbow Carpet and Flooring is deceptively simple: “What flooring should I get?” The truth is, different rooms have completely different requirements — and what works beautifully in a living room can fail completely in a bathroom or basement.
This room-by-room guide will help you match the right flooring to each space in your Central Pennsylvania home, considering moisture, traffic, comfort, and budget.
Living Room Flooring
The living room is your home’s showcase space — it needs to look great while withstanding daily family life.
Best options:
- Hardwood: Timeless and adds the most resale value. White oak and red oak are perennial favorites in Central PA homes.
- LVP: Ideal if you have pets or children. Looks like hardwood, far more durable, and significantly less expensive.
- Area rugs over LVP or hardwood give you the warmth and texture of carpet without the permanence.
What to avoid: Carpet in formal living rooms is outdated and harder to keep clean. Tile can feel cold and institutional.
Kitchen Flooring
Kitchens see spills, dropped items, heavy foot traffic, and grease — they need a flooring that can take punishment.
Best options:
- LVP: Our top recommendation for kitchens in 2025. Waterproof, comfortable to stand on for long periods, and available in wood-look styles that complement any cabinet color.
- Porcelain tile: Virtually indestructible and 100% waterproof. Cold underfoot but excellent for busy households or open-plan spaces connecting to a dining area.
What to avoid: Hardwood in kitchens is possible but requires diligent maintenance. Any standing water near the sink or dishwasher will eventually damage it. Carpet is obviously unsuitable.
Bedroom Flooring
Bedrooms are about comfort, warmth, and quiet — and the flooring choice reflects that.
Best options:
- Carpet: Still the most popular choice for Central PA bedrooms. Nothing beats it for warmth underfoot on winter mornings and sound absorption. Choose a quality nylon or SmartStrand cut pile.
- Hardwood or LVP: For homes where the owner wants continuity throughout, or for allergy sufferers who prefer hard-surface floors that don’t trap dander.
What to avoid: High-gloss hard floors in bedrooms can feel cold and echo noise. If you go hard surface, add a quality area rug for comfort.
Bathroom Flooring
Moisture is the defining challenge in bathrooms. Every product you choose must handle water exposure.
Best options:
- Porcelain or ceramic tile: The gold standard for bathrooms. Select a textured surface (R-rated slip resistance) for safety, especially in showers.
- LVP: Waterproof LVP works well in bathrooms — particularly useful when you want a cohesive look with adjacent bedroom flooring. Ensure the product is rated fully waterproof, not just water-resistant.
What to avoid: Solid hardwood should never go in bathrooms. Laminate is also risky — even small amounts of standing water around a toilet or tub can cause irreparable swelling.
Basement Flooring
Basements in North-Central Pennsylvania present a unique challenge. Our region’s seasonal humidity swings mean moisture control is critical below grade.
Best options:
- LVP: Our clear first choice for finished basements. Fully waterproof, comfortable, and provides a finished look. Use with a vapor barrier underlayment.
- Tile: Works well for basement wet bars, laundry areas, or walkout basements with exterior exposure.
- Moisture-barrier carpet: For basement family rooms or home theaters, a cut-pile carpet with a moisture-barrier pad can work if your basement doesn’t have active water infiltration.
What to avoid: Solid hardwood and laminate should never go below grade in Central PA. The seasonal moisture changes will cause cupping, swelling, and failure.
Entryway / Mudroom Flooring
Entry areas in Central Pennsylvania need to handle mud, salt, snow melt, and wet boots — especially from November through March.
Best options:
- Tile: Tough, waterproof, and easy to mop. Large-format porcelain with minimal grout lines is easiest to maintain.
- LVP: Works well and provides a more seamless transition from the rest of your main level flooring.
What to avoid: Any soft flooring material — carpet or cork — will look dirty and worn within one winter.
Stairs
Stairs require special consideration for safety, durability, and acoustics.
Best options:
- Carpet: Safest option (provides grip and cushions falls), quietest, and easiest to install. Choose a low-pile, durable nylon.
- Hardwood with carpet runner: A classic look that provides the warmth of wood with the safety of a carpet runner down the center.
- LVP with stair nosing: For a completely hard-surface look throughout. Requires careful installation and anti-slip nosing on each step.
